A Timeline of Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, from 1950-2020. 1950 — Harpur College, named for colonial educator and former New York secretary of the land board Robert Harpur, becomes a liberal arts college in the SUNY system. 1952 — SUNY trustees announce that a 387-acre tract of former farmland in Vestal will be the site of Harpur College's permanent campus. A groundbreaking ceremony takes place in 1954 and Gov. Averell Harriman dedicates the campus in 1958. 1954 — Faculty members Bernard Huppé and Robert Rafuse develop the "From Breadth Through Depth to Perspective" motto in a written pamphlet on liberal arts programs. The Class of 1954 gifts a plaque with the motto to Harpur. It now appears in the Peace Quad. 1961 — Harpur College completes move from Endicott to the Vestal campus. In 1965, Harpur College becomes SUNY Binghamton, one of the four university centers. 1969 — Roger Hekinian (geology) and Marylou Lewandowski (English) are Harpur College's first PhD recipients. 1970 — The Grateful Dead performs on campus and "Harpur College" becomes part of the title of one of the band's most famous recordings. 1987 — Sidonie Smith is named interim Harpur dean, becoming the first woman to lead the college. She serves until 1990. 2010 — The Harpur Fellows Program — which offers students the opportunity to design and lead a community-service project anywhere in the world — is established. 2014 — The Harpur Edge program begins, providing students with resources to enrich their college experience. 2019-20 — Led by Dean Elizabeth Chilton, Harpur College marks its 70th year with alumni celebrations around the country. www.binghamton.edu/harpur
